Party Fever

I have made a resolution....I am going to party....I dont know when or where but I know I am.

I have been bitten by the party bug...Its not often that I feel like this...but summer is approaching and I have been listening to my soca and reggae music again. Today I even went shopping for outfits....didnt find anything but the point is ..I am in the mindset. Its been a while since I danced my ass off. the last time I did that I walked in the party with curls and came out with my hair dripping wet and bone straight...and probably 5 lbs lighter. lol

so my next mission is to find a good fete...(fete=trini term for party). I may have already found one but I am not too sure. One of my friends invited me to a Pajama Party..now I never went to these Pajama Parties..but I know they are know for their people wearing the scantiest outfits ever...and I dont think I can compete. I mean my idea of a pajama wear is a tank top and shorts....and I dont think that would be acceptable. But just maybe I can find something sexy but decent to wear. Maybe then I would go. I dont think I can or even want to compete with the see through bikini tops and bottoms that might be strolling this party. But I do want to show my support and dance my ass off. hmmm

Something to consider....

Anyway I am off to paint my nails...

Podcasts

Its certainly been a long day....between studying, running errands and taking care of family business I am pooped!

Still struggling with the cold but taking it one day at a time. Anyway I meant to write this entry two days ago but just been too busy to sit down and do it.

I have a Zune, a graduation present from my brother and the best feature of the entire thing are the podcasts.  Apparently this is the year where I am introduced to all things technology...podcasts...blogs..online tv...which reminds me I have shows to catch up one. Anyway I subscribe to a couple of podcasts...ThisAmericanLife, KidsWifeWorkLife and Quick & Dirty Tips podcasts series. And I absolutely love them, they make the day pass so much quicker. Its like listen to your favorite radio show hosts without commercials. Ofcourse folks on the train on my morning commute to work sometimes wonder what is making me grin so hard....I can read the expressions on their faces.

Anyway the other day these podcasts did the opposite...they made me cry. Strange..it was like the same feelings watching a sad movie evokes. First it started with KidsWifeWorkLife...which is a husband and wife podcast couple that basically highlights their life..ups..down ....the peculiar..in the most humor-filled way. The thing is just listening to them , their laughter is infectious. Anyway Chris, the wife & a teacher, told the story about one of her student's parent's surprising them at school...the thing is this kid hasnt seen his father in over a yr because the father was in Iraq. It made me realize thats the down side of military families...the separation....never knowing when your loved one is coming home...and in some cases if. My Hubby will tell you, as well as my best friend and my brother, that they love the "comradery"...and I kid you not..all three of them said the exact same word without knowing what the other said. And I get that feeling, I understand that love of people, of friends of family and brotherhood that develops. But its still scarey to think...no matter what I am part of a military family...by choice (hubby), by blood (brother) and love (my best friend) and one day that might be me.

But the other podcasts is me...its my family. In ThisAmericanLife  there was a segment called Nobody's Family will Change, it was a story about a young family whose life and dynamics were changed when the father had a stroke that lead to a personality change. Right then they were us and we were them. I started to cry, not cause I was sad but because I wasnt alone. We werent alone. I played it for my mom and my dad. Sometimes I long for the family we were then...before that fateful day. And then other times I know that if it didnt happen that I wouldnt be me. And I like me and what I have been able to accomplish. But that doesnt stop me from wondering.

Anyway I think its time to hit the sack.....but before I do...check out the podcasts...

Buckleys

Buckleys...it tastes awful ...and I dont care if it works!!

I havent taken Buckley's cough syrup in years...but unfortunately I was forced to (apparently my persistant coughing bothers others more than I knew...shrugs)...it first started with a tingle in my throat..then a little sneezing and sniffling and now...now ladies and gentlemen its the hack hack cough cough.

All I can say is ARGH! its terrible...who came up with this stuff. Why to get relief I have to subject myself to this urine tasting cough medicine.

Anyway....time for me to go....I am exhausted..came home, changed up my bedroom a little...okay alot. I am very proud of myself..however moving a bed, bookshelf, dresser drawer, two night tables, and office desk can wear a girl out. But i am very happy with the results...my work space is less confining and prison-like and I can finally watch tv and be on the computer at the same time. And just in time cause I was getting a bloody stiff neck.

I am off..taking the day off tomorrow.

dying

How do you tell someone they are dying.....do you even tell them or do you use euphemisms to try to minimize your own discomfort. My grandmother has cancer...however today was the first time I wa faced with her mortality..and limited time she may have.

And I realised if I am dying I want to be told...no stinking euphemisms....no beating around the bush..tell me .."you are dying...you should tr to prepare and enjoy as much time as you can as much as you can"

And you know what I hope I will be able  to do...I hope I will be able to write or voice record little love notes to the ones I love. Reminders of me, and them together.

I hope I will be as strong as my grandmother..even stronger

Stockings update....Leggs gets a 5 out of 10

So as I said before I am panty hose shopping...and this week I tried Brown Sugar by Leggs line..Sheer off black. Well while I didnt have to stretch this bad boy too much and it had a great fit on day 1, and I go through the day without any runs. Day 2 however was another story...it was over stretched, developed runs and just wasnt attractive any more.

So while it first provided a great fit , in terms of the darn thing past my knees...on day two it was a good thing I didnt wear a skirt because it was baggy @ the ankles.

Anyway thats my fashion update for the evenning

The Financial WarChest (yells out my warrior cry...XENA!)

I came across this phrase today..."Financial WarChest"..but truthfully I have known about it all my life..or atleast been taught that I should always have one. My mother believed in a woman...and a man (said the same to my brother) should always be financially independent of their spouse or significant other. She said this was your safety net...so that you wont be kept in a situation you didnt want to be in longer than you have to just because you depended on someone else to provide you food and shelter.

I am not the only woman who was taught this....we have always heard the phrase..money is power...and if this is true then the one who holds the purse string also wields the power. So many women (and men) have been "prisoners of war" because their WarChest was empty.

Now I say the word ...war over and over again in this entry...mainly to drive the point that sometimes at the end of a relationship...or the beginning of the end ....we go to war on each other. This can be any type of relationship...from parent to child ..."If you dont do your chores..no allowance this week"....from husband to wife..."You cant leave me...how you going take care of yourself...you never owned anything in your life"....even employers try to exercise their power..."If I cant get this report by Saturday night, Johnson, I will have to look for someone else who can". When a person has the power to threaten your sense of security...it makes for a very volatile relationship....envy, rage, and deep rooted resentment begins to take the place of love , respect and admiration that was once in your heart.

So I ask you, Joe Public, do you believe you should have a Financial WarChest? If not...why not..and if so, and you do have one..what made you start it? Is it okay to have a separate bank account for yourself....and do you tell your spouse or keep that little tidbit to your self?

*Stands with my legs wide apart looking like a Amazon with a chest of gold at my feet and a spear in my right hand*....Xena, the Warrior Princess has nothing on me.

The Men in my life and what they taught me

Like the women who surrounded and guided me throughout the years, the men in my life have also taught me life lessons. Maybe its because of the male figures that I have such a deep admiration for the male gender. The primary males in my life consist of my father, brother, hubby, male friends and uncles.

Just the thought of my father makes me smile. His very essence embodies the good nature humans thrive to possess. He is a pure humanitarian and often goes out of his way to help others...sometimes at his own expense. Maybe its because of his nature that he was attracted to my mother's persona. While he is the "Yes, Ma'am I'll help you type", my mother is the "No" that balances him out. Her "No" has saved our family from the poor house many a times. But my father's "Yes" have kept our home filled with much needed laughter, love and friends. My father's taught me to enjoy life..keep laughing...treat other's how you would love to be treated and never think twice of helping a fellow man.

This brings me to my enforcer, protector brother. Like any other siblings we fought like cats and dogs. And with him being 5 yrs older and much bigger I was like a rag doll in his hands. But I used what God gave me...my brain and patience...and waited till he would get sick (however those were infrequent events, apparently it takes more than me coughing on him to give that boy the flu)   to kick him while he was down...call me an opportunist. We had all out brawls that started with devious tricks of hiding his teenage mutant ninga turtles weapons to him interchanging the body parts of my barbies...and with 6 barbies..this was alot of work for a kid. But the thing about my bro & I is that we are a team. From the days of duping the neighborhood kids out of their lunch money by conning them into thinking my little girl status left me ignorant of the ways of the nintendo...super mario bros was our game. To our own recent mini drag race on the streets of brooklyn...(p.s. dont try this). My brother and I may fight but his underlining philosophy is " noone else touches my sister".  From my brother..I learned how a woman is supposed to be treated...respected...and protected. But also with my brother I see a modern man's daily struggle to do right by his family, a man dealing with teenage daughters and pre-school girls all at the same time (he is still wondering what he did wrong in a past life to deserve 3 girls..lol).

When I look at my hubby I see my rock...my confidante. I often wonder where he stores his discipline....cause I am plotting to steal it. When he puts his mind to something he goes after it with all his might , a one track mind, to get it done. Sometimes I wish I could immulate him and have the focus that he possesses to get things done. I may be a planner...but I am a multitasker and because of that my attention wont be on one thing....sometimes this is good and sometimes this is bad. He can turn off from the world and concentrate on the work at hand and not deviate until his time is up. I find this both unnerving and amazing. For several evenings I watched him work....until recently I have never seen him in his work environment ...working hard. I have to say it was an eye opening experience, all throughout he continued working..no breaks..no chit chat that was not work related or combined with him doing work while talking..none of that. As I said it was unnerving...maybe because I know if he was my boss I would have been fired a long time ago. I take breaks...lots of them...I relax..I talk...sure I get things done...before deadlines but thats cause I am a planner and I plan for every natural disaster under the sun....and make time for my "bull shit time". But not him.

He taught me what it is to be steadfast....but most importantly he taught me to appreciate the simple things in life...things we often take for granted...those that make life worth living...family, friends and most importantly love...true love....long lasting love. Love that last throughout the time...never falters..never forgets its committment..love that grows with you. Love that is imperfect, unapolgetic, human ...but real.

From my male friends, or my boys as I call them....I get a peek into the psyche of men. Its strange that I have been surrounded by men that could be so different ..from the educated thug to the straight version of Farnsworth Bentley but yet they view women and dating in similiar ways. From my boys I learned to recognize "game"..I learned how not to compromise myself in order to gain the attention I wish to capture .

From my uncles...the womanizers...lol...I learned that men will lie by telling you the truth. I know sounds crazy but read it again...Men will lie by telling you the truth. I wont explain but some day you will see. I also learned that women will accept what we want to accept. So even though we, women, may know he is not ours for the taking (or playing) we still accept what we are given. For some this is enough.

I have been fortunate enough to have all these male influences in my life...for I know there are many people out there who have not had the honor. To them I say..they arent all dogs, and the good guys arent all taken...learn to trust and love but never compromise youself in the process

Thats enough typing for one night
